POTSDAM – Canton-Potsdam Hospital recently hosted a “Let’s Not Meet by Accident” event to instill in students some ideas about driving safely.

A total of 77 juniors from Potsdam High School visited CPH in morning and afternoon sessions for a program presented with St. Lawrence County STOP DWI.

Their visit began with listening to a recorded 911 call and a talk given by St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Caringi on what police see when first arriving at a crash site. They also watched a video on DWI presented by St. Lawrence County Stop DWI Program Coordinator Michele James.

In smaller groups, students then visited three stations: the Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad conducted a first responder simulation with Emergency Medical Technicians Brent Faber, Roxanne Cliff, John Mitchell and Danny Parker; in the Emergency Department, a trauma simulation was conducted by Dr. Mark Healey and Kelly LeCuyer, RN; in the morgue, St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood described how identification of remains, organ donation, and parent notification following a fatal accident is done.

The students then met back in a conference room for a video on the effects of distracted and impaired driving.

“If we can prevent just one collision by making students aware of the dangers of impaired or distracted driving, then we have done our job and the program is worth it,” said Director James.
